ultra-flattering tees
Short sleeve season is upon {most of} us and it’s the time of year to evaluate the basics in your Spring/Summer wardrobe. A couple flattering solid colored tee shirts are necessary building blocks for a versital wardrobe. A black and a white tee are the essentials and I suggest also having at least one or two tees in colors that you love and look great on you. When evaluating your current tee shirt selection, make sure your tops are long enough to cover your the waist of your pants/shorts/skirts, are flattering in the fit and that the white tees are not yellowed or dingy. {It is very normal to have to replace white tee shirts annually.}
When selecting a flattering tee shirt for my female clients, here are my go-to tops::
The Caslon Shirred V-neck Tee {$29} at Nordstrom is a favorite for my clients. It is amazingly flattering, especially if are conscious of your tummy area. Many of my clients ask me, after trying on this shirt, “How many of these shirts can I buy without having too many of the same top?!” This v-neck is available in a whopping 15 colors, too, making it very tempting to stock-pile. {My suggestion is to stick with 2-3!}
I love the James Perse Relaxed V-neck {$50} for a casual white or black tee. I have this tee in white and pair it often with jeans or shorts and a scarf. It’s also cute layered under a boyfriend blazer. It’s super soft and very relaxed in the fit {hence the name!}, so it’s flattering around the waist and hips in that it’s not too tight.
If you are looking for a bit-dressier tee with some embellishment or uniqueness to it, Anthropologie has the corner on the market for quality, fit and selection. Anthro’s selection and offerings are always changing, so I suggest going in store to find a few labels that fit you well and your size in those lines. Then, check the web for new styles to pop up…and check the sale section online, too, as knits will often be marked down. Here’s an example of a cute knit thats slanted lines are ultra-flattering and gives it the ability to be dressed up or down.
One more thing…purchasing in-expensive tee shirts can be tempting. I have a dear friend/client {who will know who she is and smile when she reads this!} who stock-piled nearly a dozen clearance GAP tees and never wore them because they simply didn’t fit well. During a Wardrobe Edit, I told her that there was probably a reason they were so cheap!!! For the same of amount of money, she could have purchased 1-2 quality tees that fit amazing! I’m not saying that you have to spend a lot for a shirt to fit well BUT if it comes down to a dozen mediocre tops versus a handful of tops that make you feel great, my philosophy is that it is far better to invest in a couple basic tees you love and feel flattered in!
Stylishly yours, Lauren
