I love being a voice of freedom in the world of fashion! While this “rule” applies to both men and women, I find men are usually more affected (or should I say “bound”) by it. It’s a commonly held belief that you can’t mix black and brown in the same outfit. While I do not recommend wearing a black belt with brown shoes or vice versa, when it comes to clothing (not accessories), it is a-okay to combine black and brown. Think of these two colors as two neutrals that work well together. For example, try pairing a brown sports coat over a black sweater or wearing a black polo tucked into khakis with brown accessories. Simply, select either black or brown to match your accessories and then mix and match as you desire with the rest of the outfit. You’ll be surprised how many new outfit combinations you can invent by mixing black and brown together!

The color of these Penny Loafers by Cole Hann is, in my opinion, the most neutral leather-shade you can wear. This saddle/camel color looks great with black and with varied tones of browns. Don’t be afraid to mix shades and depths of brown tones together!

Picture 44Remember that chino and khaki is a great medium on which to blend browns and blacks. A chino sports coat, like this one pictured by J.Crew,  is one of the most versatile pieces a man can have in it’s wardrobe.
