Memorial Day Must-Haves

First of all, I have not forgotten about my promised spray tan post. I don’t want to give you just MY opinion on it — but the experts advice behind it, too! That said, if you were thinking about going to get one for the long weekend my advice would be: RUN to Kai and get one stat. I was a new person at the beach last weekend. But like a said, full disclosure with the pro is coming your way…

Back to the “long weekend” thing. It’s the unofficial start to summer and that means somehow managing to look fabulous in 100 degree weather. Hey, don’t sweat it (literally). Here are a few of my pics to help you look and feel fresh outdoors all weekend long:

1. Dove Ultimate Go Fresh deodorant : $4.50 in drugstores – Number one for a reason, ya’ll. I use this myself, and swear by it. Won’t ball up, rub off or quit working until you shower it off! Plus, the fresh scents mean you can ditch the perfume in a pinch.

2. Davines Su Nourishing Soothing After Sun Body Cream : $28 davines.com – Spent just a little too much time in the sun? Skin feeling a little tight and maybe just a teeny bit red? Have no fear, this cream with soothe your skin, while adding vitamins and minerals that will help prevent damage.

3. YSL collector sun powder: $72 amazon.com – Whether your want to enhance your sun-kissed glow….or need to enhance your more fair skinned disposition (me), this mineral powder will do both. You can use it on your face and/or all over your body for a little extra “umph” in your sundress! PLUS, you’ll have this compact for a long time — waaay worth the investment.

4. Kielh’s Lip Gloss : $14.50 nordstrom.com – C’mon, you knew I wasn’t going to skip a must-have’s post without mentioning lipgloss. This one has SPF to protect your lips from those harsh rays! It also comes in approachable colors that you’ll feel comfortable wearing to the beach or the barbecue.

Discoveries of the week!

I am always on the lookout for new products to try. From hair-ties to body butter, you know by now that I love.it.all.

This week I found two new things. One I am quickly falling in love with, and the other I am dying to try.

1. NARS Velvet gloss lip pencil: I know what you’re thinking, “Seriously, Callie? You have a million-and-one lip colors!” –well, you’re right. But REALLY, my investment in finding these new things is for YOU the reader who needs me to make these sacrifices in the name of beautiful lips!!

But I digress. Why I am la-LOVING this right now is because the texture of the pencil is creamy like a lipstick, has a touch of sheen like lipgloss and has the staying power of a lip pencil/liner. Perfection!! Not to mention is comes in a million flattering colors.

2. Trader Joe’s Sunscreen (SPF 30, the perfect coverage to protect and still get some color): Who the heck knew TJ’s would have sunscreen down their aisles?? I am a BIG fan of this little store and the way that they do customer service and good for you, quality food. PLUS, I love sunscreen. This one doesn’t have any werido extras in it — and best of all for the ladies, it’s oil free (read: no fun in the sun induced bacne or breakouts…yuck) !!

Out with the Old, In with the New!

It’s a New Year and the ideal time to embrace the adage, “Out with the Old, In with the New!” What better place to start than in your own closet, with your own wardrobe. In the words of Miuccia Prada, “What you wear is how you present yourself to the world, especially today, when human contacts are so quick. Fashion is instant language.” So, why not put your best foot forward each day? Life’s just too short (and too fun!) to feel and look mediocre most days. Does this mean you need dressed to a “T” everyday? Certianly not. However, it is possible for you to be a more confident, stylish you…dressing in line with your lifestyle, age, body type and budget while representing your individuality.

A few tips::

1. Banish each and every item in your wardrobe that you don’t feel fabulous wearing. The ho-hum pieces we struggle to get rid of usually wind up becoming significant stumbling blocks as we get dressed each day. Our eyes inevitably are drawn to these lack-luster items first, focusing on the things we don’t like or feel good in and leading us to the dreadful “I-have-nothing-to wear” syndrome!

2. For every new item you bring into your wardrobe, get rid of another item. Try to eliminate a similar item to the new one you just purchased. For instance, get a new denim jacket that you absolutley love? Then maybe it’s best to retire your past jacket. Buy a few black tee or turtleneck? Since you don’t need two alike, donate the older one.

3. Commit to stop buying items this New Year just because they are on sale or a good deal! Instead of purchasing lots of sale items, take the same amount of money and invest in a smaller amount of quality items. This is particularly important to do for those everyday essentials that you find yourself wearing all the time. Develop a “wish list” of the pieces you’ve been eyeing for months or maybe even years. Maybe it’s a pair of designer jeans. Maybe a pair of Tory Burch flats. Maybe it’s that Coach purse. Whatever it is, big or small, it’s worth saving for. It’s far better to have one pair of jeans that you absolutely LOVE and feel amazing wearing than multiple mediocre pairs.

Since there’s just something about a third-party (and one that isn’t a family member or a close friend) that enables us to be more receptive to critique and honest truth, it’s often extremely tough to take the above steps without the help of a professional.
