The Best Plaid Shirts for Fall

Continuing our “Best of Fall” series, today I want to highlight another Fall “Must Have”  The Plaid Shirt.

Be sure to check out our other recent posts about our favorite Fall Trends:

Why a Plaid Top Is So Essential

Plaid shirts are not necessarily a trend because they are always a classic Fall and Winter wardrobe essential. This year there is an abundance of gorgeous plaid tops available and, quite honestly, I just cannot get enough!

1. Plaid has enough color and pattern to “carry” an outfit without doing a thing! If you are looking for an easy weekend look, simply throw on a plaid top and jeans. No accessories necessary!

2. Plaid can be dressed up by adding a statement accessory. Take plaid into the night by pairing with skinny jeans, flares or leather pants, and a fun accessory like a blingy necklace or earrings.

3. Plaid can be tucked into a pencil skirt or slacks to wear to the office.

4. Plaid is a great layering piece for cold Fall/Winter days. Layer a plaid shirt under a vest, cardigan, jacket or pullover sweater.

5. Plaid is an investment-worthy classic, so when you purchase a plaid shirt{s} this season, you can wear it for years to come! {There are also so many affordable plaid pieces out this season, you don’t have to spend much to get a great looking plaid.}

6. Plaid looks holiday-ready, especially plaids with reds and greens. Consider plaid for family Christmas pictures and/or dress up a fun red/tartan plaid for a holiday party.

Ways I’m Wearing My Favorite Plaid Shirts this Season

I wore this look for a family day on Saturday at Ponce City Market and Skyline Park. This kind of outfit is my go-to “mom style” and an outfit that I find to be a perfect combination of cute and comfortable! I added my favorite leather jacket for evening.

I love pairing plaid with denim cutoffs and ankle booties on warm Fall jeans. This is also a great way to transition plaid into Spring!

A black and white plaid shirt is a fun staple to pair with colorful accessories. Don’t be afraid to wear brown/taupe shoes with a black top! See a full post on this outfit here in my post, Fall Reboot with Shoe Carnival.

A plaid shirtdress is another great Fall staple. This affordable one from Nordstrom is longer in the back, and can be worn as a dress or a tunic, layered over leggings. It comes in several colors, too!

Tucking a plaid shirt into a suede or denim skirt is one of my favorite ways to dress up plaid. Tying a little bandana scarf like this one by J.Crew around the neck is a trendy way to accessorize! {See more of this out on this recent Mad for Plaid post.}

In case you haven’t noticed, I have a serious crush on this plaid tunic top from Nordstrom BP! It’s hands down my favorite plaid shirt of the season, which is why I own it in four colors! You cannot beat the softness/comfort and fit for its $45 price tag! It comes in seven colors, too. It runs large, so I recommend sizing down. I am wearing an XS for reference.
